The most famous cinematic tale of a young kid being possessed by demons is unquestionably William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist«, which was deemed immoral
by religious groups and banned in the UK until 1984. With “Three«, Saudi director Nayla Al Khaja’s presents a fully-modernized, culturally more diverse
version, of the story: it is set in Dubai, Catholicism is replaced by Islam and cultural barriers between Western and Middle-Eastern culture come into play.
Ahmed used to be a sweet little kid, but is suddenly given to spurts of menace that turn increasingly scarier and more violent. His divorced and professionally
successful mother wants to take him to a doctor, but her devout sister suggests an Imam. A handsome British doctor comes into play, but Western medicine
alone seems to be no match for the evil spirit in possession of the boy. East and West, who according to Rudyard Kipling “shall never meet«, must now work
together to save the boy and those around him. »Three« is a scary, beautifully-executed and haunting ride into the world of evil
spirits, competing cultures and conflicting lifestyles – an »Exorcist« for the Arab world whose scares don’t lose their punch in the West.
