It is June 1996 – and the world is coming to an end. At least that’s what a huge
percentage of Bogotá’s population believes, as the forthcoming lunar eclipses
is seen here as a clear sign of the arrival of the Antichrist. 13-year-old Mila, a
good catholic schoolgirl on the cusp of womanhood, notices this, but also has
other things on her mind: her very first crush on a handsome soccer player and
her mother’s boyfriend’s creepy advances
Added to this is the fact that Mila, while gorgeous, is a bit of an odd duck
herself, so while everyone around her is running scared because a girl from
their neighborhood has gone missing, she is primarily in the process of finding
herself. But something is undoubtedly in the air – and it smells undeniably
like sulfur. The celestial event triggers a mass trance and Mila suddenly finds
herself at the center of the end of the world.
In her feature film debut, Camila Beltrán tells a tender coming-of-age story in
which the magical realism of South America combines with motifs from genre
classics such as »Carrie« to create a poetic genre-gem.
