One day, the successful actress Chiara Mastroianni begins a travesty and dresses up in men‘s suits a la »Ginger & Fred«, puts on a wig and a moustache and
now “is” Marcello Mastroianni, her father and, at the same time, superfather,
whose shadow as an icon of European cinema clings to Chiara at every moment
of her life. Christophe Honoré has made a very French, very nostalgic and very
personal film that is a wonderful homage to cinema and does not want to say
or contribute anything to the world situation. Exactly that‘s what makes this
movie so enchanting. The wonderful actors and filmmakers from Chiara‘s life,
including her mother Catherine Deneuve, play themselves with a wink. With
Chiara‘s transformation, Christophe Honoré‘s film also lovingly becomes a
surprising comedy about the widespread discourse on identity and the dogged
seriousness with which it is conducted.
Above all, this is a very tender, warm-hearted film about love and friendship,
and kindness for the father. It is about death and farewell and about living on
in memory.
