»Jenseits von Schuld« dives deep into the poignant lives of Ulla and Didi
Högel, the parents of Niels Högel, who was sentenced for 87 murders. Through
intimate portrayals of their daily lives and personal interviews, Nemec and
Köster reveal the couple‘s unending struggle with the in-tense media scrutiny
and the haunting memories of their son’s crimes. Though Niels Högel re-mains
an invisible presence looming over their existence, the film chooses not to gra-
phically depict his horrific deeds. Instead, it focuses on the profound emotional
and psychological burden that has weighed on his parents since his conviction.
It captures their relentless efforts to rec-oncile with the repercussions of his
actions while striving to rebuild a sense of normalcy in their lives, which is
perpetually overshadowed by these dark recollections.
»Jenseits von Schuld« vividly portrays their emotional turmoil, the unbearable
questions of guilt, and the persistent stigma they face. It is a deeply moving ex-
ploration of pain, guilt, hu-man resilience, and the ceaseless battle to reinvent
one‘s life amidst profound adversity.
