What Leos Carax, the visionary director of »The Lovers on the Bridge« and
»Holy Motors«, accomplishes with »It’s Not Me« is not easy to define. He
creates a deeply personal film, unbound by traditional narrative constraints.
Carax turns the lens inward, documenting his own life and thoughts, offering
a rare glimpse into his inner world. The result is an intriguing interplay of life
and cinema, a puzzle that is both intricate and straightforward. In many ways,
it echoes the work of his great mentor, Jean-Luc Godard. The film weaves
together fiction and documentary, but above all, it celebrates cinema as the art
of montage: layers of images and sounds converge and overlap.
This film is an exploration of what cinema can be, especially as an art form
rooted in the power of editing. True art, after all, aims to reach for something
beyond its grasp, knowing it might fail. But it is only when art dares to reach
beyond its limits that it becomes truly great. Carax embraces this challenge
with remarkable boldness, diving headfirst into the uncontrollable. This
audacious spirit is what sets him apart, making him the only true successor to
Jean-Luc Godard’s legacy.
