What starts out as the story of a music journalist interviewing a famous
rockstar, quickly takes an unexpected turn, as the writer and his photographer-
girlfriend have quite a different agenda. Instead of listening to his musings
and taking his picture, they want to steal a valuable painting from him and his
artist-girlfriend during a weekend on his Italian country estate.
This shall not be the last of many twists and turns during »Electra«, the
hilarious, sexy and colorful feature-film debut by Hala Matar, whose playful direction and eye for the absurd allow her to gleefully break with many cinematic
conventions, while at the same time keeping the audience engaged and on the
edge of their seats.
Borrowing from Greek tragedy, Hala Matar tells a beguiling story of love, be-
trayal and desire. As an homage to her role model Fellini, she uses extravagant
production design and intoxicatingly beautiful Italian settings to create a film
that skillfully balances the drama with lightness, colors and lots of refreshing
ideas. An American-Italian co-production shot in Italy and the first feature film
directed by a Bahraini woman
