While reading Edgar Allan Poe‘s doppelganger-novel »William Wilson« during his vacation, inspector Murot runs into his identical counterpart, the brash and vail car salesman Walter. His curiosity gets the better of him, and after an evening of way too much wine Murot wakes up on Walters‘s porch swing, with scant recollection and a massive hangover. When his doppelganger is subsequently found dead and mistakenly identified as Murot, the inspector leans into the identity swap and finds out how much Walter was loathed and disdained in this village full of potential murder suspects, including a wife whom Murot himself never had. Light and graceful references to »Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot« make this droll portrait of a small town filled with neurotic characters and human vices a cinematic feast.
