After a brutal twist of fate, Jessica, who is portrayed by Jules Willcox, wants to start over. She has cancelled her lease, put her belongings into a trailer and is now on her way north. But this fresh start takes a bitter turn when she ends up in the sights of a serial killer roaming country roads. She, who wanted to be alone to deal with an unexpected trauma, suddenly finds herself all alone in an unequal duel to the death. A duel that director John Hyams tells with an atmospheric vehemence that repeatedly takes our breath away. »Alone« is a masterpiece of cinematic reduction. By using many straightforward images from Jessica’s perspective, Hyams conjures a feeling of hopelessness. One does not just watch the martyrdom of this young woman who is forced to exceed her physical and emotional limitations. One lives through it with her. The haunting images and the perfectly timed editing create an incredible suggestive impact. They draw us into Jessica’s fight for survival and stay with us afterwards.
