Pepe Sánchez-Campo is the epitome of the unscrupulous landowner, even if he still
owes most of his dubious career to Daddy. With his latest project, he finally incurs
the wrath of the local resistance movement. They immediately make demands and
occupy the building site. When Pepe tries to get out of his dilemma by means of
bribery and violence, he is kidnapped by the rebels. The situation soon spirals out
of control and drags Pepe into a maelstrom of bright red blood fountains and naked
chaos.
Ever since his directorial debut »Los Muertos« (2014), Santiago Mohar Volkow
has been tackling unconventional themes, and »A History Of Love And War« is no
exception from that rule. The absurd grotesque is the logical consequence of a
passionate love match between Wes Anderson and Yorgos Lanthimos - with Aki
Kaurismäki as the involuntary best man: Like a completely uninhibited telenovela,
Volkow’s outrageously good-looking anarcho-comedy derails after a short time and
reliably tears down all boundaries of good taste on its extremely entertaining path
into the abyss. Viva la revolución!
